CAMERON Smith, Jake McLeod and Kevin Marques yesterday led a rousing amateur hour uprising to challenge the seasoned pros at the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA.

Australian amateur champion Smith fired eight birdies in a dynamite eight-under-par 60 to catapult into a share of the halfway lead on the short Par-68 City Golf Club layout in Toowoomba.

Smith, 19, emulated the opening day 60 of Adelaide-based Jason Norris in his morning round to reach 10-under (66-60) early.

Indooroopilly amateur Marques (62-64) joined Smith, Norris (60-66) and threatening 2011 New Zealand Open winner Brad Kennedy (64-62) at the top of the leaderboard.

Teenaged Queensland amateur champion Jake McLeod found nine birdies in his own hot 60 to sit one shot adrift.

Smith rode a hot streak with his Scotty Cameron putter before chipping in for birdie on the par three 17th to give himself a shot at breaking 60.

Smith sliced his final drive on the 18th, had to chip out of the trees and needed a superb up-and-down from 140m out for par.

"It's definitely possible for someone to shoot a 59 around here if you have a good wedge and putting day," a delighted Smith said.
