LEADING amateur Cameron Smith fired eight birdies today to rocket into the lead at the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA in Toowoomba with a brilliant 60.

Smith, 19, emulated the opening day 60 of Adelaide-based Jason Norris in this morning's round to reach 10-under-par (66-60).

Norris was still to tee off as the lean Queensland teenager rode a hot streak with his Scotty Cameron putter.

Chipping in from 7m on the par three 17th gave Smith a shot at breaking 60 on the short, par-68 layout which features just a single par five.

Smith sliced an ordinary drive on the 18th that nearly ended up on the adjacent 10th fairway. He had to chip out of the trees and made a super up-and-down from 140m out for par.

"It's definitely possible for someone to shoot a 59 around here if you have a good wedge and putting day," a delighted Smith said.

"I'm excited I'll be somewhere in the picture heading into the weekend but there are a lot of players in the afternoon field also capable of going low."
