Accused hit-and-run killer Geoffrey Sleba released on bail - Toowoomba Chronicle


BREAKING: The truck driver accused of the hit-and-run killing of Lowood cyclist Dr Martin Pearson has been released on bail from Toowoomba Magistrates Court.


Kingsthorpe man Geoffrey Joseph Sleba, 43, faced charges court over the the death of Dr Pearson on Millmerran Inglewood Rd on April 25.


Dr Pearson was participating in a cycling event when, police allege, the road train driven by Sleba collided with him.


Detectives arrested Sleba yesterday afternoon.


He was seated in the docks of Toowoomba Magistrates Court, wearing a brown prison uniform as charges were read this morning.

Defence barrister Frank Martin submitted that Sleba had no previous criminal convictions, a limited history of traffic violations, and was not a flight risk as he had no passport.


Police prosecutor Senior Constable Natalie Bugden argued there was a risk Sleba could attempt to hinder police prosecutions if he were not in custody.


Sleba was released on bail with a $5000 surety bond paid by his father.


He is due to face court in Warwick on October 8 for a committal call-over.
