Toowoomba nuns to help needy Africans - Toowoomba Chronicle

A PIG breeding project in Cameroon and a health clinic in Tanzania are set to benefit from the charity of Toowoomba residents.

The Missionary Sisters of St Peter Claver and their Mission Committee will help "the poorest of the poor" by selling rare and beautiful items donated by the community.

"It is two years since we arranged our last rare and beautiful sale to aid the poor in mission areas," Sr Miriam Lorenz said.

"And we are hoping this will be even more successful than previous sales."

She said it was difficult for the committee to decide who to help.

"We receive many requests from missionaries."

They finally decided to assist Fr Gasper Masilamani, who wants to establish a small farm for pig breeding on land in Cameroon.

"The farm will teach animal husbandry to local people and also provide food for families whose diet is deprived of protein," she said.

"This will help to combat malnutrition, especially in infants and children.

"The second request is from Sr Restituta working at Mtandika Health Centre in Tanzania.

"Many families whom they visit are running short of food and some are almost starving, so they would like to provide maize flour, rice, beans and oil for those in acute situations."

The Rare and Beautiful Sale will be held tomorrow from 7am to noon, in the Sacred Heart Parish All Seasons Function Centre, on the corner Tor and North Sts.

A variety beautiful and rare items will be for sale including Waterford Crystal, Royal Doulton, Mikasa and Royal Stafford China as well as everyday items such as jewellery and crockery.

"Not only can you buy something rare and beautiful, you will also be helping people who do not receive aid from any other source," Sr Miriam said.
