Health staff trained to keep kids safe - Toowoomba Chronicle

TOOWOOMBA Hospital staff have been training hard to deliver enhanced paediatric emergency care to Darling Downs children.

Toowoomba Hospital clinical nurse educator Vicki Stevens undertook a new simulation training course at the Royal Children's Hospital in Brisbane, as part of the Simulation Training on Resuscitation for Kids program.

The course focuses on teaching staff to recognise sickness earlier and improve life support skills in the event of an arrest.

Ms Stevens will now teach what she has learnt to paediatric staff at Toowoomba Hospital.

The program was developed in response to identified gaps in professional development opportunities for clinicians in rural and regional areas, with an aim of ensuring children receive the best possible medical response regardless of which hospital they present at in Queensland.

Ms Stevens said she was looking forward to returning to Toowoomba Hospital to share her knowledge with other clinicians.

"With the support of the SToRK team I will be able to deliver training to other healthcare professionals at Toowoomba Hospital to ensure we respond in the best possible way to high pressure situations," Ms Stevens said.

"If a child becomes critically unwell it's important that everyone involved in that child's care works effectively and efficiently to provide the necessary treatment and get the best outcome."

Ms Stevens said simulation training had been invaluable for her work.

"Simulation allows clinical teams to practice working together and reflect on areas in which they could improve the care they are able to deliver," she said.

"Just as airline pilots use simulation to practise emergency drills, medical teams must ensure their skills are ready to use at any moment."

Cafe voted number one for customer service - Toowoomba Chronicle

RUTHVEN Street's Crazy Goat Espresso has been recognised as one of the best customer service experiences in Toowoomba.

Since opening its doors only three months ago, cafe owner Lisa Turnbull has quickly developed a reputation for impeccable service.

A poll on the Chronicle Facebook Page asking for Toowoomba's top customer service experience was inundated with responses.

However, among the many different nominations, Ms Turnbull was a clear winner.

"It's a real surprise to be recognised like this," Ms Turnbull said.

"I am really happy to think that my customers feel like I am doing such a good job."

She said her secret to good customer service was very simple.

"I like to treat everyone who comes into my store as one of my friends," she said

"They are all very important to me and I want to give them a great experience.

"I like to put myself into everything I do and this is no exception."

Rob Hendry of Toowoomba Autobarn was another that readers singled out for recognition.

Toowoomba's Jerry Reading said on Facebook that Mr Hendry and fellow Autobarn employee Jay Parker went above and beyond to help.

"I had trouble finding parts. However, these guys sorted it out for me and did it below my cost expectations," Mr Reading said.

"Unreal customer service."

Mr Hendry said helping customers was all just a part of his job.

"Customer service is something which is a big part of what we do here at Autobarn so it is nice to hear we are doing a good job," Mr Hendry said.

"If someone comes in with a difficult problem then we do our best to resolve the issue for them in a short amount of time.

"As soon as a customer walks in the door, it is important to have a smile on your face and a passion to help them with their needs."

Report: Cost-benefit analysis crucial for new public works - Toowoomba Chronicle

GROWTH in the value of major infrastructure projects across the country has stalled, reinforcing the need for independent analysis of new publicly funded works, a new Deloitte analysis shows.

The latest Deloitte Access Economics' investment monitor showed the value of all projects was in a "holding pattern", with resource construction investment set to fall below 50% of all investment.

It also revealed the public sector would need to carry a "larger burden" of the investment agenda in coming years, with estimates of up to $16 billion of investment by state governments.

That investment could yet in part be funded by mass privatisations of state-owned assets, with the Abbott government promising to cover 15% of the cost of new projects if funded by the sell-offs.

But the Federal Government, reliant on the asset recycling investment scheme to bolster the economy, has already had a setback with Senate knocking back the bills.

Crucially, the bills failed to get Labor's support due to a lack of complete cost-benefit analyses of major projects being part of the proposed laws.

The Deloitte analysis shows a 0.4% fall in major project investment in the June quarter, while the value of future projects rose $10 billion during the quarter, mainly on the back of proposed state investments.

"While capital recycling can be a useful mechanism for funding new infrastructure in a constrained fiscal environment, consideration of the cost and demand risks for new projects is critical," the Deloitte report said.

"Indeed, it is important that appropriate cost-benefit analysis is undertaken for all major investment projects, and that analysis is arguably even more important when projects are funded by the public sector."

Kurt Cobain biopic will go into production next year - Toowoomba Chronicle

Courtney LoveCourtney Love

COURTNEY Love says a new biopic of her late husband Kurt Cobain will go into production next year.

The Hole frontwoman has claimed that she, her and Kurt's daughter Frances Bean Cobain and Nirvana's Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic will be involved in casting and production.

She told the Philippine Daily Inquirer: "CAA (Creative Artists Agency) directly sent me actors' (demo) reels. That was really tough because these boys are so pretty, so cute. I won't name names because I don't want to jinx it for anyone but these are 25-year-olds who are blond, gorgeous and the new Brad Pitts.

"There's a ton of those. Some are really good actors, not just pretty faces. I don't want to be the person who makes that decision. Let's leave that to the agents; I have great agents now. But I will have a say in it."

Courtney previously claimed she can't go out in Hollywood without someone asking her to take part in a biopic of the late Nirvana singer, who committed suicide aged 27 on April 5, 1994.

She said: "Honey, I can't go out in Hollywood at night without somebody grabbing me and saying 'I want to be a part of this', and we're talking to the biggest producers in town."

Usain Bolt dispels the doubts and finally reports for duty - Toowoomba Chronicle

SOME of the big names may have fallen by the wayside and pulled out of Glasgow but the biggest of all has not: to give him his full name, welcome Dr Honourable Ambassador Usain Bolt.

Bolt announced his arrival in Glasgow yesterday by taking a picture of a bagpiper as he exited his flight from Gatwick with the words "you know where we at", and Commonwealth Games organisers must have breathed a collective sigh of relief to finally have him on Scottish terra firma.

The fastest man on the planet may only be playing a bit part on the track as part of the Jamaican 4x100m relay team but he is unquestionably still athletics' main attraction and, in this instance, the Commonwealth Games' biggest draw.

Until yesterday, there had been conjecture that Bolt, ineligible for Jamaica's 100m and 200m line-up after missing the trials with a foot injury, would also pull out of the relay, but in what has become his trademark bizarre pre-event press conference, with disparate questions on Gaza, Scottish independence and his beloved Manchester United, his most telling remark was about his commitment to competing.

"I am here to run," he said. "I don't see why else I would travel to Glasgow. I will definitely be running."

And for what it's worth he is following the situation in Gaza, was totally unaware of the impending independence vote and is still adamant he will get on United's books, even under the new manager in Louis van Gaal.

Much like his form and fitness in 2014, this was not quite vintage Bolt. Sure, he feigned disgust at not being introduced by his full title and posed for selfies with Australian journalists but he was a tad more muted than his usual gregarious self.

But the main thing is that the big show is in town, and with Mo Farah, Mark Cavendish and Yohan Blake among the star attractions to have pulled out through illness, injury and disinterest respectively, how Glasgow needs him.

Bolt defended the likes of his training partner Blake, who insisted he would play no part in the Games even before injuring his hamstring, and others for withdrawing. "I don't think anybody pulled out on purpose," he said. "It's about injuries. It happens in the Olympics and World Championships, things just go wrong at the last moment. It's unlucky but it's just one of those things. It's a sport. The Games will go on and they will be good, I am sure of that."

Bolt can fully expect attention to follow him in the six days that remain before the 4x100m relay final. Usually such is his schedule at a major championships that he sits out the relay heats to keep himself for the gold rush of the final.

But for all his confidence, not even he can open his season like that when there is a gold at stake in the final. "Yes, I will be running the heats," he said. "I think I need the runs really because this is the first run of the season. I need to get it going."

His season habitually begins at the start of June in Rome's Stadio Olimpico. This year, it will be almost two months later at Hampden Park. The cause of the delay has been an on-going foot injury that has led to the will-he-won't-he speculation about his Commonwealth Games appearance.

Any sense that he might suffer the ignominy of limping out with baton in hand was dispelled instantly. "For me, the injury has completely gone," he said. "Fitness wise, I have done a lot of training over this past month. I have been really pushing myself and I am in pretty good shape but I am not yet in running shape hence why I am running the heats, just to get a few runs in.

"I am taking my time, not pushing myself to then get injured again. I am focused on getting through the season and getting some races in."

As a result his expectations on the track are somewhat understated. Jamaica should comfortably win the 4x100m relay whoever is in their line-up - and Bolt has no idea who that might be - but there were not the usual predictions of times and medals.

Off the track, his expectations for his Scottish trip were "lots of rain and seeing lots of kilts", although the offer of a kilt from one Scottish journalist was coolly rebuffed with the line "red's not my colour".

Gold is the colour to which Bolt has become accustomed and a Commonwealth gold is the one thing missing from the medal cabinet in Kingston, Jamaica.

The cynics might say he is only competing at the behest of Sir Richard Branson, whose Virgin Media brand are major Games sponsors as well as big backers of Bolt. For the athlete himself, he protests it is the lure of something new that brings him to Scotland.

"I have always wanted to compete in the Commonwealth Games," he said. "The first one I strained my hamstring so I couldn't get to go to Australia, the second one was in India, it was October so it was a bad time for me because the World Championships was coming up.

"This time, I got injured earlier in the season. I didn't want to take anyone's spot - I got injured so didn't get to go to the trials - so I decided why not just come here to do the 4x100m."

It is surreal to think the 100m heats start today with the world's fastest man sitting with his feet up in the athletes' village. Apart from watching the Reggae Girls (Jamaica's netball team), he plans predominantly to stay in his apartment.

Glasgow will get to see him to compete for less than 20 fleeting seconds on the track, first in the heats and then in the final. But the city is just happy he is here at all.

DATA retrieved from the ill-fated MH17 flight black box shows the plane was hit multiple times by shrapnel from a missile explosion.

European officials have described the finding as "massive explosive decompression" as the clean-up of the wreckage site continues in Grabovo, Ukraine.

An unnamed European air safety official told CBS News on Sunday (Australian time) that the missile "did what it was designed to do ... bring down airplanes".

Personal belongings, passports and identification cards are still being found, along with human remains scattered around the site.

It has been more than a week since the Malaysian Airlines plane was blown out of the skies above Ukraine killing 298 people including 37 Australian citizens or permanent residents.

It is widely believed Russian-backed militants fired the surface-to-air missile after mistaking it for a Ukrainian military plane.

Pork industry warns weak labelling laws are cheating us - Toowoomba Chronicle

AUSTRALIAN pork producers claim their industry is being undermined by weak labelling laws that make it easy for foreign pig meat to be portrayed as home-grown.

Australian Pork Limited chief executive Andrew Spencer told ABC Landline on Sunday fine print and vague language meant customers find it difficult to make decisions.

"Labelling makes it really confusing for our consumers to even identify Australian-grown bacon," he said.

"People do not understand when they are eating bacon there is a very large chance it has come from a pig grown on the other side of the world."

He said the industry is urging the Federal Government to make tougher laws that more clearly identify the country of origin.

Producers are attempting to stem the flood of cheap bacon imports by promoting APL's pink pork-mark label which guarantees a product is Australian.

TWO burglars found out they had decided to rob the wrong person when their attempted housebreak was foiled by former WWE world heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan.

Daniel Bryan, real name Bryan Danielson, was walking back home with his wife, Brie Danielson, to their property in Phoenix, Arizona, when they saw two men making their way out of the house holding a bag of loot.

When the two men realised they had been spotted, they dropped the stolen goods and decided to Sprint off down the street.

However, keen to apprehend the two thieves, Bryan gave chase.

The professional athlete soon caught up with one of the thieves, 22 year-old Cesar Sosa, and used all of his wrestling experience by holding Sosa in a "rear naked chokehold" until police arrived.

The other suspect managed to get away.

Speaking at a press conference after the incident, Bryan said that the couple's first worry was for their two-year-old French bulldog Josie, who they had left in the property.

After making sure that the Josie was ok, Bryan said he was "very angry" when he found out that someone had broken into his property and "out of instinct" gave chase.

Bryan said that after chasing Sosa for 400 feet he was able to catch and take down the "exhausted" burglar.

Holding him until the police came; Bryan said that the burglar gave up very little resistance and repeatedly apologised.

When police arrested Sosa, they found that alongside, he had an outstanding felony warrant for kidnapping against his name.

Reflecting on the incident, Bryan said that he was "borderline ashamed of what he did", saying that it was "probably not the best thing to do because you don't know what is going to happen."

The robbery resulted in Bryan losing a bracelet given to him by his father who passed away earlier this year, but all other things taken from the house were returned to the WWE star and his wife.

Daniel Bryan is a fan favourite in the WWE and is best known for 'Yes movement'.

Alongside his World Heavyweight Championship success, Bryan can count the Tag Team Championship belt and the United States Championship title as his other achievements in professional wrestling.

RESPECTED Olympic coach Dick Telford believes shock Commonwealth Games inclusion Melanie Panayiotou is a chance to represent Australia at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in two years.

Telford called the Australia Zoo head vet's presence in Glasgow a "fairytale" but insisted she was capable of rising even further once she got more experience running marathons.

"She hasn't really learnt to run - she's a one-speed runner at this stage," Telford said yesterday.

"That's what I'll be working on, to see whether she can improve and how much she can improve."

Panayiotou's inclusion in the Australia team is remarkable considering her inexperience on the world stage and the fact she fits training around her full-time job caring for Australia Zoo's 1200 animals.

"She's waking up at 4.30am and training then going to work and doing another training session at 5.30pm or 6pm when it's dark," Telford said of the 30-year-old.

"Her work ethic is unbelievable.

"It doesn't surprise me that she is doing so well with her job at Australia Zoo."

That work ethic has helped her improve dramatically during a year with Telford, who has trained marathon medallists at the past two Commonwealth Games and several former world and Olympic champions.

"She'll do everything she possibly can to improve," he said.

"If I gave her something stupid in a training program she would probably just go and do it - that's why I've got to be very careful.

"She doesn't shirk at anything."

Despite Panayiotou having a good build-up to Glasgow, Telford is keeping expectations realistic ahead of tonight's marathon.

Panayiotou is seen as a major unknown because of her lack of experience and rapid improvements, but her coach believes this meeting is mainly about getting experience.

"Basically we've just got to be realistic and set her goals that are achievable so she can come home knowing she could actually keep on improving and even make the Olympic team as she keeps going in 2016," Telford said.

RUSSIAN scientists have lost contact with an experimental satellite filled with geckos that was to be the focus of new research on animal sex in the weightlessness of orbit.

The Foton-M4 spacecraft was launched from Kazakhstan's Baikonur Cosmodrome on 19 July and made several orbits of the planet before it stopped responding to commands from Roscosmos, Russia's Federal Space Agency.

"So, there is only one-way communication," a spokesperson for mission control was quoted as saying by news agency ITAR-Tass, adding that engineers were looking to fix the problem in case life systems were disrupted, killing the creatures on board.

Oleg Voloshin, a spokesperson for the company running the experiment, confirmed that this part of the mission has already begun and that other experiments on board - including a project to grow pure crystals to be used in advanced semi-conductors - were also in working order.

The satellite is the latest in the Russian Foton-M series to be launched into space. The first launch in 2001 failed, tragically falling back to Earth and killing 20-year-old soldier Ivan Marchenko, while the second successfully proved in 2004 the lichen could survive in space for 14 days.

The third Foton-M craft was launched in 2007 and provided a temporary home to geckos, newts, snails and Mongolian gerbils. The satellite spent 12 days in orbit before safely returning to Earth, with a study of the creatures noting that the gerbils had "moved chaotically" in space.

Landing of the Foton-M4 was originally scheduled for September, although scientists will have to regain control of the craft if it is to be safely landed in southern Russia.

Longer lives a killer for the funeral industry - Toowoomba Chronicle

PEOPLE in Toowoomba are living longer with a declining death rate killing the funeral industry.

The region's funeral directors have been forced to adapt as modern medical services and quality of life mean a greater life expectancy.

Hiram Philip funerals manager Philip Shultz said the industry has changed significantly as a result.

"It has been a quieter year for business. However, it always tends to cycle around," he said.

"In saying that though, you need to make a few changes to get through the times.

"We have had to be a bit more frugal on staffing and it is the same among most business in the industry with more hiring casual instead of full time employees."

Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows a 15.94 per cent decline in deaths from 2002 to 2012.

In April, 2012, there was an average of 2419 deaths per month.

In April, 2014, there was 1901.

ABS figures also show 65 to 85-year-olds are living longer with this age group having the biggest increase in life expectancy during the past 10 years.

Toowoomba Senior Citizens Club president Jim Nelson said improved health services were helping his generation live happier and healthier for longer.

"In the past, a heart attack could have meant the end. However, today it is more common than not to make a full recovery," Mr Nelson said.

"We have members of our dancing group who are 90 which goes to show age shouldn't hold you back.

"It is really important to enjoy each moment in life and I know everyone in this dancing class has a ball."

Health minister backs Toowoomba employment service - Toowoomba Chronicle

SUPPORT: Health Minister Lawrence Springborg visits the Toowoomba Clubhouse and praises the services it delivers. SUPPORT: Health Minister Lawrence Springborg visits the Toowoomba Clubhouse and praises the services it delivers. Contributed

HEALTH Minister Lawrence Springborg has thrown his support behind the Toowoomba Clubhouse.

During a visit this week he said the organisation was deserving of Queensland Health funding to deliver various health services.

Mr Springborg said he was happy with the direction the clubhouse was taking and their innovative approach is making a difference to people living with a mental illness.

Mental illness impacts almost half of Queenslanders.

Almost one in two Queenslanders, aged 16 to 85, will experience a form of mental illness some time in their lives and for carers, families and communities, it's an enormous concern.

"I met with Prof. Peter Swannell from the clubhouse board and their chief executive, Luke Terry and the results they are seeing is encouraging for all stakeholders," Mr Springborg said.

"Research shows that wherever possible, treatment for mental illness should be provided in the community rather than in a hospital to get the best patient outcomes.

"Toowoomba Clubhouse is achieving this and the support they give people re-establishing themselves into the community is second to none.''

Mr Springborg said all Toowoomba people should familiarise themselves with the great work being carried out at the Toowoomba Clubhouse.
