Fires burn in southern Queensland - ABC Online

Superintendent Wayne Waltisbuhl says the large fire in Yuleba State Forest, north-west of Toowoomba, has been contained.

"We've been able to release a lot of crews this afternoon. The activities of today, the containment lines and some water bombing, has brought that fire under control."

"That won't go off our radar at all. We've still got some fire-weather coming in the next couple of days. We'll maintain a strong presence out there."

"Out of all the fires we've been speaking about the last couple of days, we're down to four that we've got people working on. We're slowly knocking them off as we go. We'll see what the weather brings us over the next couple of days."

Tara

Wayne Waltisbuhl hopes a fire buring five kilometres north of the Tara airstrip will be contained by evening.

"We've had some significant water bombing activities there this afternoon. We've had to bring in some other crews from another fire north of Miles that is now under control. The air operations were supporting the crews on one flank until we had more ground crews. We now have six crews controlling those edges until this evening's quiter conditions come in. That should enable us to get that one contained."

Miles

"We'll still keep monitoring a fire north of Miles in the Gurulmundi State Forest. Crews have been there all day. Whilst it's contained and safe we won't take our eyes off that."

Outlook

"We're fairly concerned with the weather forecast for the next couple of days...We'll maintain a fairly strong presence, and we'll see what we need to bring in tomorrow. Keep in mind people have been working on this for a long time, so we have to make sure people get the right amount of rest periods."

Wayne Waltisbuhl says he expects this current fire season will continue to Christmas, "or even beyond at this state".
