Massive storm hits southeast Queensland - The Australian

BRISBANE and the southeast could be in for severe weather today, with the first supercell storms of the season threatening.

Storms are likely right into northern NSW and have the potential to produce about 50mm of rain.

Weather Channel meteorologist Tom Saunders said supercells were the most dangerous type of storm and developed where wind shear occurred through an unstable atmosphere.

Wind shear - a rapid difference in wind speed and direction over a short distance - led to rotation within the storm and a longer lifespan.

"Supercells often cause very heavy rain and flash flooding, large hail, damaging winds gusts and occasionally tornadoes," Mr Saunders said.

"Supercell thunderstorms are likely across northeast New South Wales and southeast Queensland this weekend and have the potential to cause flash flooding, damaging winds and large hail.

"The main inhibitors for storm development will be cloud through the morning, which prevents air rising from the surface and onshore winds which keep temperatures down and reduce instability.

"For Brisbane, storm potential (today) depends on the timing of a cool, southeasterly change.

"If the change arrives too early in the day, then storms are less likely.

"There is a greater chance of storms on Sunday, with northerly winds likely for the majority of the day . . . Most (areas) should receive at least 20mm (of rain)."

Mr Saunders said the chance of severe storms would drop by Monday .

Julia Creek, Trepell, Urandangi and Birdsville topped 40C yesterday.

The weather bureau expects shower and storm activity to shift a little north into the Wide Bay and Burnett and Capricornia districts tomorrow.

It will be cooler in the southeast, with widespread showers, patchy rain and thunderstorms gradually decreasing during the day.
