A TEENAGER charged with the murder of a 19-year-old man has appeared in Toowoomba Magistrates Court this morning, with bandages on both of his hands.

Max Peter Smith, 19, appeared briefly before the matter was adjourned until February 21 for a committal mention to allow police forensics to finish their brief.

When formally charged with the murder of Jake Lasker, 19, he sat with his hands clasped, looking towards Magistrate Roger Stark before being remanded in custody.

Outside of court a woman who was seated in the front of the public gallery pushed past a reporter and then pushed two cameramen.

She then fell over before leaving in a 4WD with another man.

A police crime scene remains at Hogg St where the body of Mr Lasker was found yesterday.

It emerged earlier that only months ago, Jake Lasker had been given the "all-clear" from doctors after a battle with eye cancer.

Family friends said the "polite" teen and his parents had been relieved at the news and were eager to "just get on with it".

A family friend last night said the slain teen's parents "weren't coping very well".

"His parents had already thought they might lose him from cancer. Now to lose him from this is terrible," they said.

It is understood the teen went to Toowoomba High School and, in 2010, attended Toowoomba TAFE.

On his Facebook page, Jake wrote: "I have asperges (sic) which affects my emotions, so please go easy on me."

He added: "I will always care for me family and friends. I love singing my fav songs."

The family friend said Jake was loved by his parents and was always polite, "considering what he was going through".
