Roma Cup Boosted By Prize Money Increase

One of the biggest events for the Maranoa happened on the weekend in Roma.

The Roma Cup attracts thousands of fans and this year has attracted it's best horse field as well.

Wild weather was added to the mix in 2012... a huge thunderstorm passed through Roma in the afternoon sending race-goers running to the stand and the runners in Race 5 back to the sheds because it was deemed too dangerous to race.

In the end.. it continued on and became just another story to tell about the event.

Saturday's race is one of the Showcase Country Series race dates recently introduced by the State Government as part of the 4 million dollar funding increase.

The Roma Cup prize pool this year was 165-thousand dollars for the seven race program.

The ABC's Elly Bradfield was at the Roma Cup on saturday and caught up with the Vice President and Race Caller for the Roma Turf Club Peter Flynn.

Toowoomba's Blow a Kiss won the $50,000 Roma Cup.

More Showcase Country Series meetings will be held at Goondiwindi, Beaudesert and Dalby next year.

The main race of each of the meetings will be worth at least 20-thousand dollars.
