A Victorian man accused of training overseas to be a mercenary in the Indonesian province of West Papua has appeared in a Brisbane court.

Forty-five-year-old Gerard Michael Little was arrested after the Australian Federal Police conducted six searches yesterday at properties in Melbourne and Toowoomba.

Little was detained last night at Brisbane Airport.

Prosecutors allege he had travelled to Ukraine to undertake training in readiness to commit acts of violence in West Papua.

He has been remanded to reappear in court next month but the Brisbane Magistrates Court is still considering whether he should be granted bail.

More to come.
