NORTHERN Brothers Diggers made big strides in defending their TCI A grade open cricket title by snapping up an outright win over Wests at Captain Cook Oval.
The Diggers bowling attack proved it is full of wicket-takers as they bowled out Wests for 68 on Saturday in the first innings before rolling on to rout them again for 85 to win by an innings and 146 runs after making 4dec-297 on day one.
Mick Miller (6-22) and Aaron Watson (4-35) did the damage in the first innings and bowled all bar two of the overs for Diggers.
The depth of the Diggers' attack was then showcased as neither took a wicket in the second innings.
Instead, Kris Glass took a leading role, taking 5-23, while Derek Nitschke (2-4) and Dean White (2-30) also chimed in.
The outright win means Diggers lead the competition undefeated after three rounds.
"Heading into the Christmas break it was good to get an outright victory," Diggers all-rounder Kris Glass said.
"I don't think any other team has got an outright so I think that puts us a fair few points clear."
Meanwhile, University fell three wickets short of an outright victory over Railways at USQ.
Railways reached 199 in the first innings in reply to Uni's 3dec-311 to avoid the follow on. The Students batted again and declared at 2-56 to give themselves a shot at bowling Railways out for an outright win.
The Bulldogs, chasing 168 to win, managed to survive to stumps with the score at 7-94, meaning Uni had to settle for first innings points.
And Metropolitan-Easts wrapped up first innings points in their game against Souths at Middle Ridge Park.
