Ferling caps big 2012 with selection in squad for World Cup - Gympie Times

AT THIS time of year people tend to look back at what they have done in the 12 months gone by.

Few of us would be able to reflect on what they have achieved over the past year with as much satisfaction as teenage Kingaroy cricketer Holly Ferling.

To cap a big year where she made her senior Queensland debut, played for Australia's second XI in two series and travelled with the national squad as a training bowler for the Twenty20 World Cup, the 16-year-old has now been selected to join Toowoomba's Jodie Fields in Australia's 15-player squad for the ICC Women's World Cup in India from January 31.

Ferling found out about her selection on Boxing Day but had to keep the news quiet before the official release of the squad late last week.

And as well all prepare to ring in a New Year, Ferling concedes she has been thinking a bit lately about how far she has come in the past 12 months.

"I was so shocked and surprised. I didn't expect it at all," she said.

"This time last year I was playing youth cricket for Queensland but now I'll be going on my fourth tour with an Australian squad and I'm in the Fire squad too."

Ferling will join her Australian team mates in Melbourne on January 21 for warm-up games against New Zealand.

The Australian squad will then fly to Mumbai for more warm-up games ahead of their World Cup opener against Pakistan on January 31.
