There's no better place to bring in the new year than the Woodford Folk Festival in the Sunshine Cost hinterland, with more than 2000 performers and 580 events over six days and nights. Headline artists this year include Angus and Julia Stone, Kate Miller-Heidke, Archie Roach, Urthboy, Wagons, the Saints, and John Butler Trio. The highlight is the New Year's Day closing ceremony, the spectacular fire event. Woodford is 80kilometres north of Brisbane. Dec 27-Jan 1. www.woodfordfolkfestival.com.

Summernats, ACT

It would be easy to dismiss the annual street-machine festival as just for revheads with more than 1500 hot rods and customised cars on show, stunt shows and the national burnout masters championship, but there's also a great line-up of rock'n'roll, fireworks, children's activities and a street parade. Exhibition Park, Canberra, Jan 3-6. summernats.com.au.

The Royal Australian Air Force has many aircraft on static and airbourne display in support of the Australian International Airshow 2011 at Avalon in Victoria. One such aircraft is the A44 Super Hornet, commonly known as the 'Rhino', which gives Australia an upgraded air combat capability for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions until the full introduction into service of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Twenty-four Super Hornets will replace the F-111s at Nos 1 and 6 Squadrons at RAAF Base Amberley from 2010. The 2011 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition, held at Avalon in Victoria from 1-6 March, coincides with the Royal Australian Air Force?s 90th birthday. Air Force?s Airshow activities celebrate this milestone by remembering our past and looking to our future with the theme tradition, innovation, evolution. For Graphic Arts use.
