Last Post, December 26 - The Australian (blog)

Julie Bishop is reported as saying that improving literacy and numeracy at all levels of the school system was her passion and top priority ("Bishop blames union for literacy shortfall", 24/12).

So, what is she doing supporting conservatives when she should be a liberal?

A landmark study finds that one in 10 children in childcare centres shows signs of emerging mental health problems ("Preschool mental health toll at 10pc", 24/12). The academics responsible should conduct a similar study of children with stay-at-home parents. I am sure that these children enjoy much better mental health.

Brilliant article about Dunblane's pain in wake of Newtown ("People of Dunblane reach out across the Atlantic", 24/12). I appreciate the work done by Jonathan Este in writing the article.

Here's a promise the PM can keep: "There will be no budget surplus under a government I lead".

I guess the National Rifle Association ("NRA blasted over 'paranoid vision for America' ", 24/12) will now recommend that all fire crews be accompanied by an armed guard.

It's interesting to see the Queen's annual summary of commonwealth events reduced to a five-minute speech, telecast between Mr Bean and Minuscule.

The statement emanating from the Lakembla Mosque and its follow-up posting on Facebook declaring a fatwa on Christmas may seem as ridiculous as it is offensive to most fair-minded people. Yet we all must remember that such a statement is only possible because of our laws on free speech.

President Barack Obama seems unable to come to an agreement with his political opponents regarding gun control and fiscal policy. This despite both sides supposedly working for the common good of their nation. I find it somewhat amusing that the President thinks Israel and its Arab neighbours should somehow magically make peace.

Brian Caldwell, a former dean of education, should know that entrance standards don't matter ("Unis told to raise bar for teachers", 24/12). What matters is the exit standards. Albert Einstein would not have been admitted to an Australian university since Gough Whitlam.
