THANK you for Peter Badel's story of criticisms of Kortney Olson (pictured), the woman at the centre of the Gold Coast NRL "porn scandal" (SM, December 2).
I would like to add my support to Ms Olson's husband and say that she is a role model for NRL players as she is a person who has turned her life around and is helping other people and not expecting any reward for her positive contribution.
Perhaps our criticism should be turned on the "Mother of a Gold Coast Junior" who started this attack. I assume that, if her son is a junior, he is not receiving the benefit of Ms Olson's volunteer role. I wonder if this mother is doing anything positive herself or is she one of those who sit on the sideline saying "someone should do something"?

Older mothers did it all from go to woe
IN RESPONSE to Lisa-Jane O'Malley (SM Letters, December 2), as one of the older ladies who are (according to her view) the cause of the Government's monetary woes, I would like to point out that we never got baby bonuses, childcare subsidies, tax refunds for school books and government-funded maternity leave.
We also didn't expect employers to pay for family day leave plus all other "entitlements", as we accepted children as our total responsibility.
We volunteered for decades in schools and community groups and looked after our aged parents, thus saving the Government more money. Oh, and managed to work part-time.
Sorry we are such a drain on government funds and the sole cause of all government woes.

Current generation to blame for fiscal mess
WHILE Lisa-Jane O'Malley made some good points, I took offence at her suggestion the country is broke because we have to pay pensions to all those stay-at-home mothers who never paid tax.
No Lisa-Jane, it is the current greedy generation that is causing our fiscal problems. Live frugally, don't spoil the kids and don't buy houses with rooms you never use.

Fifty ways to trash a Sunday morning
RE FRONT page, Fifty Shades of May (SM, December 2). What a trashy way for you to start my Sunday morning.

Code of conduct not relevant to Olson
THE funniest thing I read in The Sunday Mail was the article about Kortney Olson, the wife of the Titans boss. It suggests that in her former life Ms Olson may have done things that would be a breach of the NRL's Code of Conduct.
Ha ha! Give us a break. Since when has the NRL enforced its code of conduct, except when it suited the Board of the NRL. Certainly not too often when its star players or crowd drawers behaved disgracefully at away games or end-of-season trips.
In any case, haven't those self-righteous people who are complaining worked out the code doesn't apply to Ms Olson? They should get a life.

Let nurses issue medical certificates
MORE people could be seen by doctors if experienced nurses were employed by every large practice to see patients who require only certificates for their employers that they are in fact ill.
Legislation could be passed to ensure that a certificate from a nurse practitioner was acceptable, and if the nurse decided that these people actually needed to see the doctor, they could recommend or arrange it.
Some employers require medical certificates for every absence. This would free up doctors to see people who actually need treatment.

No apology for their rainbow connections
DAVID Penberthy (SM, December 2) rightly observes that nothing motivates today's MPs quite like the discovery of something new to apologise for. But that's just half the story, for while busybodies are dredging our past in search of shameful behaviour requiring parliamentary redemption with a "sorry", it is now de rigueur for our MPs to be seen sporting the appropriate cause-of-the-week coloured awareness ribbon. Pink, yellow, blue, green - which one is this week's badge, pray tell?

Pell-mell view of church teachings
WHAT arrogant ignorance is exhibited by Mike Bruce (SM, December 2) when he accuses Cardinal Pell of being arrogant and out of touch in suggesting that priests cannot breach the seal of confession to report abuse. Of course Bruce is "Catholic bashing".
Pell is only expressing a universal teaching of the church which is fundamental to Catholicism.
As Father Frank Brennan said, he would go to jail rather than breach the seal, and many priests over the centuries have died rather than breach the seal.

No value in blaming Cardinal for sins
MIKE Bruce tells a meaningful personal story, from the heart, on Willie A and the "real value in life", then launches into a character assassination of Cardinal Pell. Has he ever read of Cardinal Pell's lifetime contribution for good?
And please, none of those trite throwaways, "I acknowledge the great work by the church and that offenders are a minority" to be followed by the punchline, "I'm talking about a church with a massive image problem which seems to be rotting from the head down".
Tackle the cancer of child abuse - it infests every facet of society through to the highest echelons - but try a little integrity.

Dump Bill and expect viewers to dump Ten
I'M WITH you Myra Dale. Shame on you Channel 10 for "dumping" Bill McDonald from the 5pm news. He is very popular and you have also lost me as a news viewer at 5pm. Now you are changing The Project to a later time for The Simpsons?? And you axe Breakfast. If you want your viewers back, sack your program manager and stop running repeats of everything.

ARU paid big bucks but Izzy worth it?
WHAT does it say for the current standard of Australian rugby when the ARU is prepared to pay big dollars for Israel Folau? Folau's inglorious stint in the heat of AFL indicated his lack of football skills at the top level.
Let's hope that the ARU gets something in return. Dedication would be a good start.
