A police officer has suffered minor injuries after shots were fired at his car in the town of Mitchell in Queensland's southern inland overnight.

Police say the constable was patrolling Cambridge Street in Mitchell, south-west of Toowoomba, after receiving reports of shots being fired in the area just after midnight (AEST).

They say shots were fired at the police car, shattering the passenger window and passing through the drivers side of the windscreen.

The constable managed to get out of the car and take cover.

He suffered cuts to his left arm and right elbow.

A 24-year-old man was arrested a short time later near the local river.

He is due to face the Roma Magistrates Court today charged with attempted murder, killing a dog and discharging a weapon in a public place.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart has described the incident as worrying.
