HITS on the Racing Queensland website are likely to increase markedly with TC02 results now being published.



"If it has the effect of deterring people from treating their horses illegally, knowing the wider racing public will know when horses are close to the threshold, it has to be a good thing," chief steward Wade Birch said.


A reading of 36 millimoles per litre of plasma or higher triggers a positive TC02 swab, but with a 1mm margin of error either way, it effectively means 37 is the cut-off point.


Scientific evidence suggests the average horse has a natural level between 28 and 32.


This exercise therefore will expose horses returning higher than normal levels, but within the legal limit.

"I paid $12,000 for Delago Pilli in 2010 and at his first start he ran second at 50-1 at Toowoomba," Witham said.


"I thought 'How easy's this' but then he didn't win a zac in the next 12 months."

"I'd never met Graham, but I loved the set-up he had and he and his son Darryl do a fantastic job," Witham said.
