IPSWICH is one of the most mobile-savvy shopping cities in Queensland.

According online shopping giant eBay, western Ipswich suburbs in the postcode 4305 were the third-highest users of mobile phones for online shopping in the state.

Residents in the postcode 4300, including Springfield and Goodna areas, weren't far behind, being the seventh most prolific users of mobile shopping.

Only the residents of Toowoomba and Mackay have been ranked above Ipswich as users of mobile shopping.

The information came from eBay Australia's second annual mobile shopping study, which identified Ipswich as a mobile shopping "hot spot".

Thagoona mother Laura Loveday is an avid mobile shopper.

"I've bought all my Christmas presents online this year," she said. "I haven't set foot in a physical shop."

She said she used her phone for about half her Christmas purchases.

"I get emails from Catch of the Day and I'll think 'that'd make a good present' and I'll just grab one. I also use apps like the Big W app."

Mrs Loveday said she doesn't just buy products from major outlets though, having found a range of stores through Facebook.

"I was shopping online for a while and I thought I should be supporting local businesses more and that's when I found a lot of shops run by stay-at-home mums.

"I found a lot of them through liking the Handmade Markets on Facebook on my phone."

While the mobile shopping revolution has taken off since the arrival of smartphones, Mrs Loveday said she had been buying using mobile internet for years.

"When I was in high school my dad would ring me with things he'd want to buy off eBay.

"I'd use my phone to get them and this was all before smartphones."

Mrs Loveday's attempts to keep her online shopping local falls in line with research by MasterCard into Australia's online shopping habits which found 98% of Australians looked to local retailers for online shopping.
