THE New Year is always a time when people vow to get fitter. The Chronicle is running a series on different sports to give fitness enthusiasts information on how to get involved with some sports for individuals. Today we look at the sport of mountain bike riding.
THE Range is an iconic part of Toowoomba and while most people traverse the terrain in a car on the Warrego Hwy, a group of people enjoy flying down its bush tracks on mountain bikes.
The Toowoomba MTB Club is based towards the foot of the Range, with an ever-increasing network of tracks available to ride at Jubilee Park in Withcott.
Club president Steve Baltzer says the sport is a great way to get and stay fit and also provides a big rush of adrenaline.
The club has been in Toowoomba for about 10 years and is starting to establish a quality home base for its members and riders interested in tackling an assortment of tracks of varying difficulty at the foot of the Range.
"It's only really hit its stride in around the last 12 months," Baltzer said.
"At the moment we're building more sections that will be open up in the New Year. There is a network opening up at Jubilee Park."
Novices can get involved with their old mountain bike in the shed but will probably need to upgrade if wanting to take the sport more seriously.
A quality helmet, gloves and water are also a must, while shoes and appropriate clothing are advised for anyone looking to take their bike for a spin in the bush.
Find Toowoomba Mountain Bike Club on Facebook for information on how to get involved.
