A YOUNG man was knocked to the ground and repeatedly punched and kicked in a cowardly act of violence on New Year's Day.
A 22-year-old man was walking home from a pub in Clifton when an unknown offender approached him from behind and knocked him to the ground in Clark St at 2.30am yesterday.
The offender punched and kicked the man in the head before fleeing.

Paramedics took the man to the Toowoomba Hospital with minor head injuries.
Revellers kept police, paramedics and hospital staff busy on New Year's Eve. However, there were no major incidents reported.
Toowoomba Police District spokesman Darren Smith said four police crews went to a disturbance in Hume St at 12.30am.
Two people were charged with committing public nuisance offences after a large fight broke out in the street.
"It was a busy night for police, however people were generally well behaved," Inspector Smith said.
"Eight people were charged with drink-driving and 12 people were charged with public nuisance.
"It was disappointing there were eight drink-drivers.
"Police will continue a heavy focus on drink-driving in the coming holiday period."
A 22-year-old woman recorded the highest reading of 0.180%.
She was intercepted driving on Tor St in Newtown at 5am yesterday.
Other drink-driving readings ranged from 0.024% to 0.134%.
