James Horwill is set to play his first match since May when he takes to the field for Queensland in a trial against the Chiefs on Friday night.

Horwill tore his hamstring against the Brumbies in Canberra during the 2012 Super Rugby season and has been patient in making his return to the paddock.

"It's a huge relief to be out of team rehab and in a position to play once again," Horwill said.

"We've been extremely diligent in not rushing the rehab process to ensure that my hamstring would be ready for when the Super Rugby season kicked off."

Horwill will lead the Reds in their second and final trial against reigning Super Rugby champions the Chiefs on the Sunshine Coast.

The Reds defeated the Blues 41-35 in their first trial at Toowoomba last Saturday.

Also returning from injury for Queensland against the Chiefs are Saia Faingaa, Jake Schatz, Dom Shipperley and Chris F'Sautia.

Wallabies lock Rob Simmons will join Horwill in the starting pack after completing a five-match suspension.

The Reds will be without fly half Quade Cooper who will make his boxing debut against Barry Dunnett in Brisbane on the same night.

Jono Lance will start in the number 10 jersey.
