Huge storm front sweeps southeast Queensland - Adelaide Now

SEVERE storms battered southeast Queensland overnight, tearing through areas from Dalby to Brisbane and as far down as the New South Wales border.

Around 6800 homes were left without power as the storm passed through the southeast.

In Brisbane, 1500 homes lost power while around 1000 on the Gold Coast, 1700 in Logan, 1000 in Ipswich and 1300 in the Moreton Bay region were affected.

"It wasn't a major storm on the back of what we had last weekend," Energex spokeswoman Kath Ryan said.

"Lots of people are of course very conscious of storms and storm damage because of last weekend but we were able to get our guys out there and get it running again pretty quickly."

She estimated around 500 homes were still without power this morning as a result of last night and last weekend's wild weather.

Meanwhile, areas around Toowoomba had a lucky escape after being issued with a severe weather warning last night.

Oakey recorded wind gusts of about 100km/h about 8.30pm while St George was hit with winds of 95km/h yesterday afternoon.

But a Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said there was less than 9mm of rain recorded in parts of the southwest region in the past 22 hours.

"It was quiet weather," he said.

St George resident Elizabeth Challenger said the town had experienced worse storms.

"We were meant to get a storm but it was a bit of wind but that was it," she said.

"It made a bit of noise but nothing got pulled down."

Fire and ambulance crews did not report any serious injuries or rescues as a result of the weather.

The weather bureau issued its first warning about 8.45pm and severe storms were still bearing down on the Caboolture and Caloundra areas after midnight.

Wind gusts of up to 100km/h have been recorded at the Oakey airport, northwest of Toowoomba.

A Bureau spokesperson earlier warned that damaging winds of over 90km/h were likely to hit Brisbane.

These winds would be on a similar scale to those experienced earlier this week when ex-cyclone Oswald tore through.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Lauren Murphy said the storm developed over the Maranoa and Warrego region near St George earlier in the day.

While winds are of a similar speed to ex-cyclone Oswald, Ms Murphy said this storm was not following the same patterns.
