Toowoomba police say truck drivers who ignore load limits are risking further damage to the road.

Many roads in southern Queensland have five tonne limits on them, leaving trucks stranded.

Acting Superintendent Joe Whyte says police will be conducting regular patrols, particularly on the Gore Highway.

"Police traffic branch will be on the Millmerran - Inglewood Road and also paying attention to the Gore Highway at the juncture of Oakey - Pittsworth Road," he said.

"They will be policed.

"The limit will be enforced by police who will be conducting regular patrols, in particular the Gore Highway.

"Any heavy vehicles over that weight will wreck the road and as such the roads will then have to be closed permanently for repair to let anybody else drive on it.

"Obviously causes damage to the extent that the risk is too much to leave the road open for road users."
