A truck rollover at the notoriously tight junction of James and Cohoe Streets could present Toowoomba Fire Station officer-in-charge Tony Guse with a nightmare scenario.

That nightmare would have been a reality if the truck which rolled on Monday afternoon had been carrying a highly flammable or hazardous substance.

Mr Guse warned on Tuesday of evacuations to a radius of at least 500 metres around a rolled petrol tanker.

He said houses, the Range Shopping Centre and The Great Divide Motor Inn would have been some of the buildings evacuated if Monday's rollover had involved a load of petrol or other highly flammable liquid.

He said the spread of flammable substances into the city's drainage system at Cohoe St would create a nightmare scenario, because it would flow downhill through a densely populated area.
