Queensland Health has played down fears that Baillie Henderson Hospital's days are numbered, despite rumours of ward closures and widespread staff redundancies.

Sources close to Toowoomba's mental health service have claimed up to five of the facility's wards are on the chopping block, each housing up to 24 patients.

Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service director of mental health Shirley Wigan admitted future closures were not out of the question.

"There are no plans approved currently to close wards at Baillie Henderson Hospital," she said.

"However, as part of our duty to provide service safely, effectively and economically we look at options of other ways of doing business. At the international and national level, mental health care is moving towards community based model."
