Southern Queensland's Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service says it is cutting three positions as part of a restructure of management roles at the Toowoomba Hospital.

Acting executive director Dr Peter Gillies says only one of the axed positions is occupied - the director of nursing - while the other two are vacant.

Dr Gillies says the hospital will group ward and departments into four areas - surgical, women and children, medical and ambulatory care and support service.

He says the changes are not a forced directive from the hospital and health board.

"Certainly not - this is an operational decision that's been made," he said.

"We've looked at the current structure and how it's working and come up with a structure that I certainly believe will be more efficient and provide a better level of care to patients."

Dr Gillies says the Queensland Nurses Union has been advised of the changes.

"We've just started a consultation process that'll run until April 5 - I think we've agreed - and we'll take feedback from staff and from unions as to how we implement that change and then we'd look to have it in effect from May 6," he said.
