POLICE say they are "back to square one" after ruling out links between the attempted abduction of a nurse from outside the Princess Alexandra Hospital on Saturday and a suspicious car seen at a railway station.

Detectives from Dutton Park visited Toowoomba yesterday after they traced the registration number of a car that aroused suspicion at Banoon railway station around 11pm on Saturday.

A security guard noticed the silver Nissan Pulsar following closely behind three young women and shone his torch into the car, which then drove off at speed.

It matched the description of a car that had been used by two men only hours earlier in an attempted abduction of a nurse walking to work at the Princess Alexandra Hospital around 9pm on Saturday.

But Detective Inspector Rod Kemp told the media today that the perpetrators, one of whom has a "large deep scar on the left side of his face", were still at large.

"There was a group of young Sudanese boys from Toowoomba (and) they were acting suspiciously at the railway station on Saturday night," he said.

"Strangely enough, one of the offenders does fit the description of the offender with the nurse and that vehicle likewise fitted, so we are currently running that out."

"But, as I say, at this stage we don't believe it was linked to the nurse."

"In short we are back to square one and we are asking for any member of the public to come forward to assist."

"(But) good work by the security guards there and Queensland Rail."

He acknowledged it was possible that the nurse's car could have been the target of the attack.

"The victim speaks good English, she is of Filipino descent, but it could be possible that in the shock of the event that they may have said 'give us your car' or something like that, but we can't be certain," he said.

Det-Insp Kemp said police were continuing to follow up lines of inquiry, including a similar vehicle that was stolen and dumped in Eight Mile Plains.

"Whether it was this vehicle or not, we don't know, but it was similar in nature," he said.

Detectives who had spoken with the victim said she was "distraught" from the incident.

Det-Insp Kemp said staff at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, including his own daughter, was concerned amid fears the men could strike again.

"My daughter is a nurse at the PA hospital and they are most vigilant about starting work late at night," he said.

"I think they are more aware than we appreciate it just at what risk they are at."
