Birthday markets go off with a bang - Toowoomba Chronicle

TWO years ago the inaugural Toowoomba Mummy Tree Markets caused a traffic jam in Ruthven St due to their unexpected popularity.

The first market was staged at Downlands College and it was clear the event had outgrown the site within an hour of opening.

Two years on, organisers celebrated the popular markets' second birthday and the honeymoon certainly wasn't over.

Toowoomba families descended upon the third and largest location the markets have had to date at the Toowoomba Showgrounds.

But the markets still managed to make the site look small, with hundreds of cars lining the road and filling official car parks all the way up to the Founder's Pavilion where the event was held.

Market manager and co-ordinator Anita Baills said the second birthday market was everything she expected, with plenty of people through the door and plenty of happy customers walking away with new treasures.

Stallholders added to the frivolity by donating hundreds of little items and vouchers to give away.

Asked what she thought was behind the incredible success of the markets, Mrs Baills said she was pretty sure it was all about their stallholder screening process.

"I had customers come up to me who have never been to the markets before and the big difference they found was that everything is high quality," she said.

"They know by attending that they are getting really good quality items and they're not going to come across anything they don't want to see there."
