AN elderly man has died in a house fire near Toowoomba. - Courier Mail

AN elderly man has died in a house fire near Toowoomba.

The home on King St at Goombungee, about 35km north of Toowoomba, caught alight about 10.20pm Monday.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after but the blaze was too ferocious for them to go inside the house - at the time it was believed nobody was inside.

The 87-year-old man's body was found after the fire was put out.

Two fire crews responded, with firefighters using breathing equipment to ensure they could enter the home and attack the flames from inside.

They also worked to douse the flames from outside with one fire crew remaining on the scene overnight.

Investigations are continuing.
