TOOWOOMBA'S Plunkett Cup defence got off to a disastrous start on Sunday.

The reigning champion suffered a big 199-run loss to Sub-Districts at Heritage Oval in their first game of the Plunkett Cup season.

Sub-Districts batted first and reached 4-278 from its 50 overs, with wickets spread around for the Toowoomba bowlers.

In reply, the youthful hosts never got going and were bowled out for just 79 in the 26th over.

Wickets fell regularly, with the 16-run second-wicket stand between Alex Taylor (18) and Liam Brown (10) the best partnership for Toowoomba.

Brown was coming off a huge knock of 196 for Railways in the TCI A grade one-day competition on Saturday but even he could not get on top of the Sub-Districts bowling.

Toowoomba's innings was brought to an end with the final two wickets falling on consecutive balls.

Toowoomba now faces Warehouse in Brisbane on November 17.
