A GRASS fire is burning at Cashmere, north-west of Brisbane, with fire crews, council officers and state government staff now monitoring the blaze.

The teams are keeping a close eye on the fire as it consumes land near Old School Rd, Winn Rd and Clear Mountain Rd.

It is currently burning within containment lines, posing no threat to properties.

Cashmere and surrounding suburbs are being blanketed in smoke.

It is unclear if the smoke is affecting the nearby Bruce Highway, although emergency services are warning all motorists in the area to take care.

Those living nearby are being asked to close their windows and doors and to have medication handy if they have a history of breathing troubles.

Anyone worried that their property could be affected should call triple zero (000) immediately.
