Teenagers charged over violent taxi robbery - Toowoomba Chronicle

POLICE have charged three teenage boys over the violent robbery of taxi driver in a Toowoomba shopping centre carpark.

The boys, aged 14, 16 and 16, were arrested on Thursday and early yesterday morning in relation to the attack.

Police were yesterday continuing their search for a fourth person they believed was also involved.

Toowoomba Criminal Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Paul McCusker said the teenagers caught a cab from the CBD about 1am on Tuesday and asked the 55-year-old driver to take them to Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre.

It is when they reached their destination the driver was allegedly attacked.

"The taxi driver was grabbed from behind and a sum of money was grabbed from him," Detective Senior Sergeant McCusker said.

"The cab driver received a blow to the face."

He said the youths fled the scene.

The cab driver didn't require hospitalisation.

Det. Snr Sgt McCusker said attacks on taxi drivers were an abuse of trust.

"The taxi service is there to provide a great service."

The three teens appeared in custody in Toowoomba Childrens Court yesterday.

A 16-year-old and a 14-year-old were released on bail while the second 16-year-old did not apply for bail.

The boys' matters are next due to be mentioned on October 23.
