65th Carnival of Flowers proves to be the best - Toowoomba Chronicle

TOOWOOMBA'S 65th Carnival of Flowers has proved to be among the best with tens of thousands of people lining the Garden City's inner-city streets for theGrand Central Floral Parade parade this afternoon.

A perfect spring day of bright sunshine and a light breeze welcomed the throng as a parade of 46 exhibits including 26 carnival floats past by the big crowds.

While impossible to accurately put a number of the size of the crowd, Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio believed it was the biggest he'd seen.

"It was big last year but this year has eclipsed it," he said.

"The crowds were right along the route and when the parade got to Godsall St (near the parade's conclusion at Queens Park) the crowd got event bigger."

Toowoomba's latest world sporting hero, 2014 IndyCar champion Will Power, joined in the official ribbon cutting to start the parade then joined the parade through the streets.

"I can't remember the last time I was here at the Carnival of Flowers," he said.

"I think it might have been when I was a kid.

"The (IndyCar) racing season usually goes into October so I'm not able to be here but it's great to be back."

The Carnival moves into Queens Park tonight with sideshow alley rides for the kids in Frogs Hollow and, for the bigger kids, the Flower, Food and Wine Festival in upper Queens Park.

Carnival of Flowers activities will continue throughout the next week.
