Families flock together at poultry auction - Toowoomba Chronicle

CHOOK enthusiast Kate Lack still remembers the day she bought her first chook.

She was with her grandparents and 10-years-old at the time.

"We got some silver spangled hamburgs," she said.

"I was so excited."

The 19-year-old from Pittsworth is the vice president of the Darling Downs Poultry and Pigeon Breeders Association and owns more animals than she can count.

"I like rearing geese too; if the first voice they hear is yours they think you're their mum."

Club secretary Wayne Patterson, who shares his interest with his children Hannah and Joseph, said more than a third of the memberships in the group involve families.

"We have two families where the interest has spread itself over three generations," he said.

Kate's mother Julie Lack said the common interest in poultry had been important to her family and provided an endless topic of conversation.

The Springtime Poultry Auction was held at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in the Poultry Pavilion yesterday.
