SUSTAINABILITY is on the menu at Toowoomba's newest family run organic cafe and produce store.
Darrin and Kylie Pateman have been organic farmers on a Cabarlah property for 10 years and started Homegrown Health, an online delivery service which delivered boxes of fresh produce to customers' doors.
The business has expanded with the recently opened cafe and produce store on Railway St.
"We had been planning the shop for a few years and this spot came up and we grabbed it," Mr Pateman said.
"It's a great strip with three of the most awesome coffee shops in town. People can choose where they'd like to go.
"It's awesome seeing Toowoomba light up with all these new food places."
Educating their customers about local produce and introducing them to the growers is an important part of the Pateman's business vision.
"We're good friends with our suppliers and will be inviting customers to come and say hello.
"For example, Bruce supplies our beetroot and we'll tell our customers the day he visits so they can meet him."
The store owners will adapt their menu around what's in season.
"We grow figs in February and will add fig-related dishes to the menu during that time."
Mr Pateman said the advantages of adopting a seasonal menu included freshness of produce, affordability and support for the growers.
"People are getting more and more conscious of what they're putting in their mouths.
"All our products are certified organic, which means they're grown by organic standard and are chemical-free.
"We cater for vegans, vegetarians, people who are gluten-free and diary-free."
Homegrown Health has a cafe on the first level and an organic produce, grocery and deli floor where the locally produced items are sourced directly from the growers.
It is located at 11 Railway St and open from 6am - 6pm weekdays and weekends from 6am - 4pm.
There is also a wellness centre in the building with rooms leased to a Bowen therapist, remedial therapist and a personal wellness coach.
"This store has been our dream for a long time and it's humbling we've been able to achieve it.
"We love being able to bring healthy opportunities in food and education to Toowoomba."
