OSCAR Root is one boy who knows firsthand the vital work the RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter does in our community.

The eight-year-old was on the receiving end of the service's good work when he was bitten by a 50cm brown snake outside the front door of his Pechey home.

He was airlifted with his mother Myola Root to the Toowoomba Hospital where he was treated and recovered.

To show his appreciation, Oscar presented the service with an $800 cheque on Friday when he also got the chance to meet his heroes who helped save his life.

The funds were raised by the Ravensbourne Sports Association's annual fun run and family sports day.

"Oscar was retrieved only two weeks after their sports day," Mrs Root said.

"He has made a full recovery and we have all been on high snake alert since the incident."

CareFlight air crewman Leigh Ainsley was on hand to show Oscar and other young Ravensbourne community members around the service's base.

"Oscar surprised us at the end of the tour with an $800 cheque," Mr Ainsley said.

"The money will help us save more people, like Oscar, who find themselves in need of an urgent airlift."
