NUMBER ONE: Accounting student of the year, Kristelle McCleverty, from Power Tynan Accountants. Bev Lacey
NOT many 21-year-olds can say they've just bought a house.
Toowoomba's Kristelle McCleverty must be as smart with other people's money as she is with her own - she has been awarded Australia's Accounting Student of the Year at the National Accounting Awards.
Ms McCleverty graduated from the University of Southern Queensland with a Bachelor of Commerce earlier this year.
She studied part-time under a scholarship with Toowoomba accounting firm Power Tynan which gave her an opportunity to get a head-start in the industry.
"I've always loved numbers and had an interest in accounting," she said.
"I started the scholarship program straight out of school and, now that I'm graduated, will continue to work as an accountant here.
"It put me a step ahead."
Her advice for school-leavers who might be considering their options for next year was to be aware there were programs like these around.
"The earlier you can get experience the better. You don't always have to wait until you graduate to start your career.
"There are lots of options."
She put much of her success to her career focus as well as the people and clients at Power Tynan.
The Australian Accounting Awards is a national initiative by international software developer Reckon in association with online AccountantDaily.
