TOOWOOMBA residents braved the rain to make a stand against violence in the Garden City.

A committed crowd marched from the Empire Theatre to Town Hall as part of the annual Toowoomba Says No to Violence Walk.

Sergeant Tony Rehn of the Darling Downs Crime Prevention Unit said the event was about bringing the community together to spread an important message.

"The march is about the city making a statement.

"Toowoomba is a safe city but if we aren't vigilant it won't stay that way. It is about locals sending a clear message that we have standards and are committed to stand up for them.

"Toowoomba has shown it bands together when it matters most and I think this march is a great example of that."

The march also saw youth advocate Mel Priddin awarded the Paul Myatt Memorial Award.

The title recognised Ms Priddin's work promoting non-violent relationships among young people through the Love Drunk and Love Bites programs.
