Opponents of a council-approved development at the top of the Toowoomba Range are striving to raise $50,000 to get the project scrapped by the Planning and Environment Court.

The Friends of the Toowoomba Range committee was formed at a public crisis meeting on Friday with the sole objective of stopping the Herries/Cohoe St project from going ahead.

A school teacher by day, organiser Kate Powell has already secured the services of a Brisbane solicitor "with very good credentials" to lead the campaign.

Plans to install traffic lights at the busy intersection lie at the centre of the dispute, with objectors claiming it would cause major traffic disruption on the Toowoomba Range.

Residents have also opposed the plan to build a 24-hour McDonald's restaurant, KFC and take-away precinct in the area.
