DISASTER-ravaged communities have backed Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart's call for able-bodied citizens to become first responders during natural disasters.
As bushfires continue to burn across the nation, Cassowary Coast mayor Bill Shannon - whose north Queensland region was hit by Cyclone Yasi in February 2011 - said Mr Stewart's warning was a vital reality check for residents.
