East Toowoomba residents are rallying to stop a proposed development they say will destroy the character of their neighbourhood.

Residents from Joffre St, which falls in the Toowoomba Regional Council character area, were appalled when they discovered that owners of a house on their street had applied for it to be demolished.

If the application is approved, a two-storey unit complex would be erected in its place.

According to council's website, the Neighbourhood Character Overlay Code seeks to achieve the outcome that "the character, appearance, location height and bulk of new development is compatible with those aspects of existing premises on the site or in the local streetscape."

Joffre St resident Paul Herbert and his neighbours are convinced the character of the street would be tarnished if the development was to go ahead.
