Champion biker to cross finish line - Newcastle Herald

Oct. 31, 2012, 5 p.m.

Multiple national champion Craig Anderson will retire after competing in the final round of the Australian Supercross Championship series at Newcastle Showground on November 17.

The 34-year-old West Wallsend dirt-biker will share the stage with the country’s leading riders, including his cousin and multiple AMA champion, Chad Reed, in his last competitive event.

After 26 years competing around Australia, Europe and the United States, Anderson is retiring from the professional circuit to concentrate on coaching up-and-coming riders and running his own Berry Sweet Lucas Oil Yamaha racing team.

‘‘It’s a dream come true, really. Everything started for me in Newcastle and it’s going to finish in Newcastle,’’ Anderson told the Newcastle Herald today after tearing up the track at one of his sponsor’s properties at Mount Vincent.

‘‘A lot of athletes, a lot of sportspeople, don’t really get to do that, so to have it finish in Newcastle is perfect.’’

Anderson will race in the third round of the national series at Toowoomba on November 10, returning for the November 17 finale at the Showground at Broadmeadow.
