EMERGENCY crews were forced to watch a fire consume a car with a woman inside after a horror crash just 10kms out of Dalby this morning.

Ambulance and fire crews raced to the scene just before 10am, responding to calls that a car and truck had collided on Dalby-Kogan Road, about 10km west of Dalby.

Fire crews sprang into action, battling the fire in an attempt to get the woman out and allow paramedics to get to her.

But the cause of the woman's death is now being investigated, with ambulance crews unsure whether she was killed on impact or died in the fire.

"We couldn't get near the car," a Toowoomba ambulance spokesman said.

Local businesses said they had heard sirens scream past but were unsure if the woman was a local.

The truck driver escaped the crash with minor injuries.

Dalby Police Senior Sergeant Terry McCullough said police "did not know for sure" who the woman was because her body was completely burnt.

He said the woman's car had crossed to the other side of the road for unknown reasons about 9.30am, hitting a truck.

"It burst immediately into flames and some other motorists assisted putting the fire out with fire extinguishers," he said.

"The vehicle has been totally engulfed in flames."

The woman was dead by the time the fire was extinguished, Snr Sgt McCullough said.

He said police were investigating if driver inattention was a contributing factor in the crash.

The woman's body will be forensically tested to confirm her identity.
