Hats off to Dick | Toowoomba Chronicle - Toowoomba Chronicle

Greg Johnson excited by Australian foods!Greg Johnson excited by Australian foods!

Nostalgia is a powerful drug, we all want to relive the good old days and the good old things that were important to us.

For example, whatever happened to Orfords Cordials, Tarax Cordials, Kraft Cheese, icy poles, musk sticks and devon/garlic/luncheon sliced meats, saveloys, etc, etc?

Yes, some of our beloved brands are still about but it’s not the same when they’re owned by some overseas outfit. Our most famous food, Vegemite, is now owned by a United States company; (God forbid) Billy Tea is owned in India; Cottees Cordials is based in Japan; Berri is owned in The Philippines; Bushells is based in Britain; SAO biscuits, Chicko rolls, Aeroplane Jelly, Golden Circle, PMU and Tom Piper are all owned in the US and our own KR Castlemaine Foods has gone to Britain.

Over 85% of products in a typical supermarket trolley are either imported or come from foreign owned companies. This is madness!

Fortunately someone is fighting back for the “Oz Team”, who else but hero of the little Aussie battler, Dick Smith.

Dick has released a range of Australian produced and packaged foods under his “OzE” brand and they include Bush Foods Breakfast, Cream Cheese Spread, OzEnuts, Magnificent Australian Grown Sliced Beetroot, OzEsauce and of course OzEmite!

Yes you can buy these products on the internet. But wait, even better still, you can buy them from your locally owned, Toowoomba supermarket Betros Brothers in Railway Street! The innovative team at Betros has set up a Dick Smith Foods corner, sort of a nostalgic place, where all Dick’s great foods are displayed. And isn’t it nice to know that when you buy these products you are helping Aussie farmers and creating Aussie jobs?+

Now about the products. Well, they all taste great, but I am still coming to terms with OzEmite. It’s “runnier” which is a bit off-putting, has a slightly different taste to its competitor and at this stage I am struggling to fall in love with it, but in the interest of patriotism I’ll stick with it.

Do you buy Dick Smith’s foods? What do you think of OzEmite?
