Origin greats attract 16600 Indigenous job seekers - Invest in Australia

The Minister for Indigenous Employment and Economic Development, Julie Collins, has today released figures showing 16,600 young job seekers attended the Former Origin Greats (FOGS) Indigenous Employment and Careers Expos in Queensland this year.

The expos in seven priority employment areas across the state also attracted 366 exhibitors.

“The figures from the seven expos show they are having a positive result for Indigenous employment,” Ms Collins said.

“To date more than 1,000 of the 16,600 indigenous school leavers and job seekers who attended have gained or are in the process of gaining employment or training positions.

“Although the FOGS Expos have finished for this year, the Origin legends will be back in 2013 with continued funding from the Australian Government.”

The FOGS Expos are in their fourth year and are an integral part of promoting the Government’s Learn Earn Legend! campaign, encouraging young people to stay in school, find a job and become leaders in their communities.

FOGS is a non-profit organisation committed to helping rugby league, communities and charities with a strong focus on employment options for Indigenous youth. Its members include 174 players who have represented Queensland in State of Origin.

The Australian Government has committed more than $2.4 million to FOGS to support 21 events in 2012 and 2013, including the Expos, employment forums and corporate events.

The Expos for 2012 were held in Cairns, Sunshine Coast, Mackay, Townsville, Rockhampton, Brisbane and Toowoomba between March and October. In 2013, they will follow a similar schedule with the exception that Mt Isa will replace the Mackay event.
