Photo The Chronicle Archives Neg Q598 - Scanned May 2003 The Chronicle Archives THE brother of one of two nurses who were brutally raped and murdered at Murphys Creek in 1974 is elated a court has publicly named seven persons of interest.
The murders of Sydney nurses Lorraine Wilson, 20, and Wendy Evans, 18, have remained a cold case for 38 years.
A total of 28 people will be called as witnesses when a third coronial inquest into the nurses' deaths opens at the Toowoomba Coroner's Court on April 8.
A pre-inquest conference held in Brisbane on Wednesday identified persons of interest Desmond Roy Hilton, Allan Neil Laurie and Terrance James O'Neill who will be called to give evidence.
Four deceased persons of interest, Allan John Laurie, Wayne Hilton, Donald Laurie and Larry Charles, were also identified.
Lorraine's brother Eric Wilson said he was glad the persons of interest had been named.
"All I wanted to hear was the names of these mongrels, broadcast to the world," Mr Wilson said.
"That was wonderful.
"Now they can feel the full light of the community. People can look at them differently.
"It's just a shame Mum wasn't around to hear it."
Lorraine's mother Betty Wilson, 86, wrote a letter to the state coroner in May requesting a third inquest.
Sadly, she died three days after writing the letter.
Mr Wilson will travel from his New South Wales home to attend the inquest in April.
"After 38 years, 28 people are going to give testimony to what they heard, what they saw," he said.
"The community and everybody who supported us deserve to get answers.
"I'm looking forward to it. It will be good to look those people in the eye."
Miss Wilson and Miss Evans were holidaying in Queensland when the pair decided to hitchhike from Brisbane back to Goondiwindi where Miss Wilson's car was being repaired after breaking down.
They were last seen struggling with a group of men on the Toowoomba Range.
Their skeletal remains were found by bushwalkers in 1976.
A $250,000 reward remains for the unsolved murders.
