MP drives call for speed trap - Toowoomba Chronicle

MEMBER for Lockyer Ian Rickuss is pushing for a speed camera at the entrance to Withcott after 45% of the 11,000 vehicles passing through the town daily were recorded speeding.

Mr Rickuss requested Main Roads set up a traffic counter to survey to the speed and volume of traffic travelling east on the Warrego Hwy approaching Withcott.

The counter was set up in the 80kmh zone between the bottom of the Range and Withcott, about 200 metres west of Roches Rd.

A total of 79,069 vehicles were recorded in seven days.

More than 45% of motorists were exceeding the 80kmh speed limit.

The counter recorded 4828 vehicles travelling more than 90kmh while 463 vehicles were travelling more than 100kmh.

"The top speed recorded was 140kmh in the 80 zone which is highly irresponsible and totally ridiculous," Mr Rickuss said.

Mr Rickuss said the traffic counter recorded almost 1000 extra vehicles travelling through Withcott a day when compared with 2011.

He wrote to the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the police minister last month requesting the installation of a fixed speed camera.

Mr Rickuss suggested the current speed camera located on the up-section of the Range could be moved to the new location.

"It appears not very logical (to have a speed camera on the up-section)," he said.

Mr Rickuss hoped the installation of a speed camera would improve safety for Withcott residents and motorists.

"I have constant discussions with members of the Withcott community about the vehicles travelling through the town," he said.

"There is about 3000 or 4000 heavy vehicles travelling through the town a day and getting across the pedestrian crossing is an issue.

"It is also difficult (for motorists) exiting Jones Rd and leaving the shopping centre."

Mr Rickuss hopes to receive a response soon.
