A HAT-trick from Northern Brothers Diggers all-rounder Kris Glass helped his side to first innings points on the first day of their TCI A grade open cricket match against Wests at Captain Cook Oval.

Glass ripped through the Wests middle-order to capture his first hat-trick.

He bowled opener Dylan Shaw (18) before having Shaun Montgomery (0) caught and bowled.

Cameron Marquart (0) faced the hat-trick ball and was unable to fight it off after the delivery cannoned into his pad and was judge LBW.

Glass, who is having a superb season with Diggers, was proud of the achievement.

"It was unexpected because I suppose you never expect to do that," he said.

Glass also said that his full and straight delivery that caught Marquart on the pad left little doubt for the umpire in giving it out in such a pressure situation.

The hat-trick was soon followed by the dismissal of Shaun McCarthy (11) which saw Wests lose 5-1 to be in strife at 7-38.

Trent Rogers (11) put up slight resistance in the tail to be only the third batsman to reach double figures as Wests were bowled out a paltry 68.

Glass finished with 4-20 to be the pick of the Diggers bowlers.

Diggers made light work of the run chase, securing first innings points just one wicket down.

Mick Miller (51), Louis Reen (45) and Craig Smith (31 not out) combined to help Diggers sit comfortably at 4-154 at stumps.

The other two games remain in the balance.

Metropolitan-Easts made 191 in their innings against Souths at Harristown Park thanks to contributions in the middle-order from experienced campaigners (Matt Dennis (75), Peter Reimers (37), Lyle Teske (30) and Troy Gurski (20).

In reply, Souths are 3-41 at stumps on day one of the two-day match.

Meanwhile, University needs another 152 runs for first innings points with nine wickets in hand against Railways at Captain Cook Oval.

Railways batted first and reached 166 before being bowled out, while University goes into the second day at 1-15.
