Inside the field: QLD PGA Championship - PGA of Australia

The stage is set for a showdown at Toowoomba for the Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Championship. A quality field has assembled to contest the Championship which gets underway at 6.30am Thursday 14th February, with a two tee start.


Groups to watch....

Strong field assembled….

One of the strongest fields in recent times has assembled to contest the 2013 Queensland PGA Championship.


Australian PGA Championship winner Daniel Popovic will headline the tournament and is hoping for a better showing than his missed cut at the recent Lexus of Blackburn Heritage Classic.


Starting his Tour season this week is Queenslander Brad Kennedy, who last year won on the Japan Golf Tour. Kennedy is the highest ranked Professional teeing it up this week, ranked at 155 in the Official World Golf Rankings he is also the 10th highest ranked Australian player.


Former Champions....

Queenslander Terry Price will come to Toowoomba with fond memories, the 52 year old won the Queensland PGA Championship in 1988 when City Golf Club first hosted the tournament. Price claimed the title again in 1990.


Other former Queensland PGA Champions teeing it up this week include defending champion Andrew Tschduin and 2011 winner Gareth Paddison, they also won on the City Golf Club layout.


Future on show….

The rising stars on the PGA Tour of Australasia will be hoping to show up their more experienced counterparts when play gets underway this week.


Leading the charge are NZ Open champion Jake Higginbottom and NSW PGA champion Matthew Stieger. The pair turned Professional late in 2012 after successful amateur careers and will be aiming for a second win in their short careers.


Chasing his first PGA Tour of Australasia victory is Queenslander Daniel Nisbet who finished runner-up to Stieger at the NSW PGA Championship.


While Ryan Fox (NZ), who finished tied fourth behind Stieger and Nisbet, is also hunting his first Tour title.


Brothers to tee up....

OneAsia winner Matthew Griffin will be joined by his younger brother Daniel in the field this week.


The Assistant Professional at the Mornington Golf Club in Victoria Griffin Jnr earned his place in the field thanks to a 3-under 69 at pre-qualifying on Monday.


Griffin Jnr is looking for his first win on the PGA Tour of Australasia this week to secure his card while the elder Griffin, Matthew will be looking to add to his 2011 South Pacific Golf Open Championship title.

Other notable teeing it up this week include 2011 NSW PGA champion Matthew Guyatt, European Tour winner Scott Strange, two-time Australian Masters champion Bradley Hughes, Japan Tour winner Paul Sheehan as well as OneAsia winners Michael Hendry and Nick Cullen.


Tournament information….

The Coca-Cola Queensland PGA Champioship gets underway on Thursday 14th February with the champion to be crowned Sunday afternoon at the City Golf Club in Toowoomba.


Professionals are vying for a $115,000 prizepurse as well as Official World Golf Ranking Points.


Entry is free for spectators.
