Random Acts of Romance - Toowoomba Chronicle

Love Love

Random Acts of Romance

Dedicated to Paul and Brenda........

Well it is a few days after St Valentine's Day and we can all breathe a sigh of relief.....until next year. The pressure is off. The pressure is off to perform, to produce and to stop procrastinating over whether you should or shouldn't make a gesture of 'love' to your ' loved one'! If you have to think about it then ....you are just not that into them. If you didn't get anything...then they are just not that into you...or are they? I don't know.

I spent Valentine's evening in the cinema alone (well with one other single and two couples) watching 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. B at T is one of my favourite movies so I couldn't pass up the chance to watch it on the big screen.

I texted an 'old' male friend at the start of the movie (both names start with R so using R1 and R2 no D2 jokes please!)

R 1: Going to see Breakfast at Tiffanys on the big screen.... If it wasn't valentine's day and seemingly awkward I'd ask you :)

R2: don't feel awkward, I can't make it anyway

R1: that's cool didn't think you'd like it anyway ... A favourite of mine. Oh, last two stories published in the Chronicle today!,

R2: Lois Lane

R1: where the hell is freaking superman then???

R2: you don't want a man who wears his undies on the outside!

R1: any man would do right now....settling for a cold hot dog at the movies....desperate and dateless :) just realised I was in the wrong cinema!!!Lol

R2: doh

R1: changed into the right one...all five losers and me in here!!!

R2: think positive

R1: I am just joking!

The movie was great and Audrey as gorgeous as ever. But No Valentine for me....Well not from a man anyway. Was I disappointed? Of course, what woman wouldn't be? The male in question was given plenty of opportunity to step up. Chance number one...sent an SMS to him of a photo of his favourite flowers...Gardenias.....response given.."Oh shucks.....and they are my favourite too!!:)"

DOH!!! Yes , correct!

Chance number two....... Mentioned that my daughter had written me a Valentine's note and delivered it to me in my classroom at work.......... The silence is deafening !!

Chance number three......mentioned that my daughter had received a lovely arrangement of flowers from her boyfriend and she had SMS me a photo......the silence is extremely awkward now!!

Chance number four... Mentioned that I had gone to see the movie above mentioned on the day aforementioned and nothing else was mentioned!!!

The male in question is in fact 4910 km away so out of physical reach....just as well!!:)

So thinking that there has to be some past issue related to this complete ignorance of the importance of Valentine's Day to all females (even if they pretend they aren't interested it goes without saying that they are!!) I raised the subject in a phone call on Friday night, the day after V Day. Very soon I was listening to a diatribe about the irrelevance of an Amercianised tradition and how he was so not going to go there. I'm sure I even heard him mention that the same goes for Christmas.... Yikes!!!! Yep, like I said .....past issues. Lol.

It doesn't matter what you think about the day, whether you agree or not in the commercialism of V Day, Christmas, Easter or whatever, it is the spirit of the event that is important. How you communicate that spirit to one another, the special and important people in your life. How you make them feel. Two wonderful examples of this spirit are my friends Brenda and Paul. Today, after having spent a great afternoon on the river of waterskiing, tubing and wave boarding with a group of adults and children I went to share a meal of fish and chips, wine and salad at Paul and Brenda's house.

As soon as I walked in the house Brenda drew my attention to the lovely bunch of flowers that her husband Paul had given her on V Day. This was not to make me feel bad but she was just so happy to share her experience with me. Then she went and got the cards they had exchanged on the day and let me read the love messages that they had written for each other. These guys have been together for 22 years and married for 19. They have two gorgeous children. Jason and Amy. Life hasn't been all roses and lilies for this family . Amy is intellectually challenged but has the most amazing sense of humour and there is no stopping her ...thanks to her wonderful parents. Jason is a kind and caring young man who is fabulous with young Amy.

Paul is a real hands on Father and is into all things fast and fun... No wonder Jason loves to hang out with his Dad as much as possible. Brenda is warm and caring and has welcomed me and my daughters into her home and life. I am so blessed to have the privilege to have this family in my life. We get together with various other groups of families and do all sorts of fun, outdoor , weekend activities. Just good old fashioned fun in the outdoors....swimming, camping, waterskiing, fishing etc .

As I said I am blessed to have found such great friends and role models for what I would like to experience in a relationship. These friends go through the daily grind, make the tough decisions together, support one another, love each other, laugh and play together. As I said it hasn't been easy but they are there , together, proud to share in the spirit of Valentine's Day and every other day...........expressing openly to each other .......random acts of romance .
